Old English Sheepdog, also known as bobtail or OES, is a big and hairy dog; he is carefree, cheerful and has a peculiar sense of humour that cannot be found in most other breeds. Old English Sheepdog is intelligent, well-balanced and can cope well in every situation.
OES is a loving pet and a great companion to children. He can be kept in a house or an apartment as long as he feels that he is an active member of the family. Bobtails can be quite stubborn and thus enjoy every moment in the spotlight. Old English Sheepdog needs to spend a lot of time with his family, it is not good for his character or emotional well-being to be neglected and lonely. It is true that Old English Sheepdogs may need more care and attention than many other breeds, but it is all amply compensated for. A few breeds demand and give as much emotional dedication as bobtails but in return they are unconditionally loyal to their friends and families. Bobtail's biggest wish is to be with his owner and he will do anything to please him. This is the reason why this breed is well suited for obedience training, agility and other sports. Of course, he is also perfect for herding. Although bobtails bark in unusual situations for warning, they are not guard dogs by nature and are not suited for defence training.
If your Old English Sheepdog gets regular exercise, both physically and mentally (training, learning tricks, etc.), he is calm at home. It would be ideal for a bobtail to get couple of hours active exercise a day but daily walks plus a longer jog or exercise in the wild once a week should keep him happy. You should also remember that bobtail will never move enough on his own as it is in his nature to move with the herd. An Old English Sheepdog who is out in the garden on his own needs additional regular walks with the family.
If you decide to take an Old English Sheepdog you should remember that you will always have a shadow - a bobtail will never be far behind his owner, he follows you around and is always where you are.
